Story

After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years falsely accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to exact revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play the guitar, it’s very obvious that half the time he doesn’t even touch the strings.

So I actually read the book, the real book(s) and not the watered down version you find in the bookstore. This story is compelling, character-driven, complex, and the details tell how everything fits together.

Although in a perfectly fine film there is nothing more than the outlines of the main plot lines

There is no good next to evil, no ambivalent ending and no basis for the whole, relationship between the abbot and Edmond, who basically becomes a boy. The story from the escape to Edmonds’ arrival in Paris is still missing, which is what makes the whole act of revenge believable in the first place.

Do you want to immerse yourself in the true story of the Count of Monte Cristo?

Nor is old Monsieur Villefort absent, whose story, though peripheral, is so central to who Edmond really is. So you want to see a French drama set in the 19th century that’s pretty good with some good actors, go.

Find it and Antiquarium, because that’s the only place you can find this masterpiece
